Number of positioning locations

Number of positioning locations refers to the number of locations in which a component or sub-assembly has to be positioned in order to reach its final position.

Explanation

As a general rule, the difficulty of positioning increases in proportion to the number of positioning locations required. With dimensionally stable components, the final position is normally defined by two positioning locations. However, with dimensionally unstable components (such as textiles), two or more positioning locations may occur. Each positioning location results in another real action (movement carried out with a component or tool) that needs to be considered from an ergonomic perspective. A high number of real actions can lead to an increase in the frequency of movements to be carried out by the upper limbs and therefore results in a higher ergonomic risk. The ergonomic risk increases even more in connection with a necessary joining force. For further information, see section "Forces".

Rule M-F1:

For components that have to be positioned at or into more than 3 positioning locations, the value >3 has to be analyzed with the appropriate frequency. Any required adjusting and corrective motions are included in the value.

Rule M-F2:

Great positioning depth (> 25 mm) must be analyzed with an additional P1 (process) if the component must be inserted, by hand.

Note:

If more than one positioning location is available, it is possible to provide the assembly difficulties with a quantity:

Example 3:        A component has six positioning locations. Three of these are designed in such a way that there is an obstructed view during installation.
